HAG Capisco Chair | Original 1980's Design | Red Leather

Super-rare Retro HAG Capisco chair in stunning used condition.

When we first came across this chair, we almost had to double-take! This has to be the earliest Capisco chair we've ever stocked. This original design has the same saddle style seat as the 8106's of today, but with a subtle difference to the shape of the backrest.  

It's clear to see the previous owner had lovingly cared for this chair, of which they confirmed was purchased new by their Architect father in late 1980's. Initially I must admit we was dubious of this age as the chairs overall appearance does not give the impression of it being nearly 40 years old. However with a little research the first design of the Capisco is indeed from that era. We cannot help thinking this chair must have been lightyears ahead of anything in production during that period. 

In fact "lightyears" is a good description of its futuristic design for the 80's, as this model Capisco was featured in many episodes on board the Enterprise in the Star Trek franchise. 

World-renowned furniture designer & inventor Perter Opsvik collaborated with HAG to first release the Capisco in 1984. Its advanced appearance & sitting philosophy likely lead to its slow uptake, as this generation of office workers aspired to high-backed managerial type chairs. In the 80's a desk chair defined your office status. Higher the backrest, the bigger your pay cheque! Gradually the Capisco rightly gained popularity and international recognition. And in 2023 HAG celebrated 75 years of Scandinavian excellence in the furniture industry, with the Capisco firmly established as a global design icon.

We predict good examples of early edition Capisco chairs may go on to become extremely valuable future classics.

Unfortunately any manufacture labels to confirm a build date are no longer present on the underside of the seat, having most likely fallen off long ago. 

Regarding the chairs overall condition, all adjustments are working perfectly with the Red leather upholstery displaying rude health for its age. Other than a gentle clean & polish, we decided to not undertake any further refurbishment to keep the chair as original as possible. And for that reason paint chips and surface scuffs can be seen on the base.
